A first-timers guide to better sleep, less stress and quicker recovery with hemp

 In Education

So, you’ve finally decided to enter the world of CBD, but have no idea where to start. Your sleep is wack, your stress level is atrocious, and you’ve been skipping the workout in fear of waddling into work the following day… you my friend, are in the right place. It’s time to learn more about the benefits of recovery with hemp.

As many enter the world of CBD, it is common for a multitude of questions to float around in your mind unanswered or tied to many myths. So, before we dive into the areas CBD will enhance your life, let’s begin by covering the basics:

Refresher of what CBD is and what CBD is NOT:

What is CBD?

The hemp plant contains 100+ naturally occurring, active compounds called cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (commonly known as CBD) is one of the cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a cannabinoid found primarily in marijuana, CBD does not produce any intoxicating or “high” effects. Meaning, the user can experience the therapeutic  benefits of the plant without disconcerting feelings of lethargy or enhanced anxiety.

What CBD is NOT:

CBD is “not intoxicating”. While the media loves to state that CBD is “non-psychoactive”, this is an untrue statement. CBD is certainly a mood altering substance. However, it does not have the intoxicating effects of THC and does not result in obvious cognitive alterations.

CBD works differently than its closely related relative tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. Both have therapeutic properties, however, they both work in different ways in the body and the brain. CBD delivers health benefits of cannabis without feeling intoxicated.

How To Reap The Rewards:

There are many ways to consume cannabis products through a variety of different methods. CBD oil has allowed for cleaner ingestion methods, such as topical lotions, tinctures, edibles and more which have become increasingly widespread.

If you’re overwhelmed by the wide variety of CBD products, you are not alone. Each method delivers CBD to your body in a different way, which affects what it can be used for and how often you’ll want to take it. Adding to that confusion is the fact that each of our bodies responds differently to CBD, meaning there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation. That’s why we’ve put together a guide to help you design a cannabinoid treatment plan that fits your individual health goals — whether you’re choosing your first CBD product, or just optimizing your current routine.

Clarify Your Goals:

Ask yourself what you want CBD to improve. Do you want better sleep? Do you have a lot of everyday stress? Are you just curious to see if life is somehow “better” with it?

Many people benefit from tracking their progress of recovery with hemp. You could use a score to rate your symptoms or try journaling about your current experience. Creating a baseline record will help you judge the effectiveness of your CBD treatment.

Better Sleep

The importance of a good night’s sleep can’t be overstated. So often, we stay up late trying to milk the day for as much time as we can get – then wake up early feeling tired and bleary. Or we toss and turn in bed, replaying the events of the day or the week or the month, our brains cranked up until midnight while our bodies lay there exhausted.

Study after study has shown the importance of regular, restful sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle. Sleep deficiencies can affect everything from brain health and cognition to immune and mental health. Fortunately, choices for improving sleep have evolved over the years. Taking sedatives or antihistamines that leave you feeling groggy are far from the only – or healthiest choices. Sleep seekers nationwide have turned to mindfulness, yoga, hot baths, herbal blends, and our *insert bias* favorite, CBD in the quest to ensure some solid shut-eye without the worry of negative lingering effects.

What does the Research Say?

As CBD has exploded onto the market, consumers are turning to the cannabinoid to treat many ailments, including insomnia. The insurgence of CBD has also prompted a sizable uptick in the number of preclinical and clinical studies looking at CBD’s value in treating a whole host of disorders.

Although CBD research still has a long way to go, research suggests that it can help your restless nights. This study conducted by Scott Shannon, MD involved 72 patients. 47 subjects had anxiety, while the remaining 25 experienced a difficult time sleeping. The results showed that a 25mg CBD pill ingested on the first month showed the following:

  1. 79.2% of all participants said that CBD resulted in lower levels of anxiety.
  2. 66.7% of all the participants said that CBD gave them a better sleep experience.

Pre-bed jitters decreased, and sleepiness increased. We call that a win-win thanks to CBD.

Less Stress

We live in a world where virtually everyone is affected by stress in some way. These experiences may be short-term for some, but for many, ongoing, chronic issues affect their everyday life.

Conventionally, medication is used to treat stress and mood disorders. People are told to find outlets or de-stressing techniques, like yoga or meditation, to alleviate life’s stresses. But CBD is now being used as an effective way to alleviate such health issues without any side effects.

What does the Research Say?

With human trials still in their infancy, there is one leading research article that is making its way into the laps of many who have fallen victim to this mental tension. An article published in Frontiers in Pharmacology, stated improvement within participants that have social anxiety disorder. Public speaking for example, is one of the social anxiety disorders that CBD is known to support. In this study, participants rated their stress before giving a speech without taking CBD compared to taking a low dose of CBD a few hours before the speech. The experiment concluded that 82% of participants experienced a large reduction within their stress leading up to the speech.

Quicker Recovery

In regards to fitness, CBD helps with muscle growth, quality sleep, and recovery. It doesn’t matter if you’re an aspiring professional bodybuilder or just someone who wants to look and feel their best. With that said, you’re probably always on the lookout for the best new health and wellness products that will elevate your fitness routine – CBD can do that!

What does the Research Say?

CBD oil’s anti-catabolic properties make it a highly recommended supplement in fitness regimens where increasing muscle mass is a primary goal. Additionally, its benefits for runners, yoga enthusiasts, professional athletes and others in the health and wellness world strongly suggests that this is not a fad, but a supplement that is becoming a staple. More and more people are beginning to second-guess western medicine and are looking for a more natural way to help fight disease and pain – and CBD is increasingly becoming part of the answer.

Another benefit is that CBD can be ingested in many forms, including via capsule, oil or even topically as a cream. CBD creams and salves also have a place in the fitness industry for topical inflammation, pain relief and flexibility – three things that are key for recovery.

Finding Your Daily Dose for Recovery with Hemp

How well each method works varies from person to person, and is influenced by many factors (covered in more detail below) so dosing is a highly individual process.

It’s always recommended to start with a low dose to make sure you don’t react poorly to any of the product’s ingredients. Starting with ½ to 1 serving of a product can be an effective way to gauge how you react and if you feel you may need more. While more is not always better, finding that sweet spot can take some time and patience!

There are no established guidelines for the best way to use CBD to achieve your health goals. Prepare for a truly unique experience that deserves a little loving experimentation. As always, we wish you success on your journey and should you have other questions for us, we’re here to help!
