Everything You Need To Know About CBD And Skin Care

Thanks to CBD, cannabis is getting its stress free glow up. You won’t have to scan the beauty shelves too long to find the CBD skin care products. CBD has made its way into sunscreens, masks, lip balms, moisturizers, and so much more.

The real question isn’t which product is best for you, but if you really should be slathering this stuff on you skin. Before we dive into the in and outs of CBD skin care, let’s get down to the basics of this healing hemp compound.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of over a hundred compounds called cannabinoids that are extracted from the hemp plant. The two most well-known cannabinoids are CBD, which does not get you stoned, and THC, which does.

So, how exactly can something that comes from the hemp plant affect the appearance of your skin? It turns out that your body produces its own naturally-occurring cannabinoids called endocannabinoid. Their purpose is to support your skin’s endocannabinoid system. This system is a complex network that’s job is to keep your skin in homeostasis – that is, a happy, healthy, and balanced state.

How Does CBD Help The Skin?

We are still learning about the benefits of topical cannabidiol in skincare products. However, researchers are leveraging the medical studies done on CBD’s response within the body.

Known for its healing properties, cannabidiol offers an anti-inflammatory approach to skin care. CBD infused skin care products provide benefits which can enhance treatment for skin concerns like inflammation, dryness and free radical damage.

What Does The Research Tell Us?

The major purported benefits of CBD in skin care seem to be related to an anti-inflammatory effect. CBD might also be effective in fighting acne as it helps reduce the production of sebum in the skin. Additionally, studies indicate that cannabidiol may be effective in treating eczema and psoriasis as well.

While the research is still in its infant stage, it’s generally considered safe to use a high quality product topically.

How To Find The Best CBD Skin Care

We advise consumers to be aware that not all cannabis-derived topical ingredients are created equal. Some of the cannabis-derived products on the market may not have the same potency or deliver the same results. Simply put, they’re just capitalizing on the CBD high right now.

A few key factors to keep in mind while shopping for CBD skin care:

  1. CBD isn’t always called CBD. When buying a beauty product, look for these words in the ingredient list, which indicate there’s actual CBD in the formula: CBD, hemp CBD, full-spectrum hemp extract, phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil, hemp extract oil. As mentioned above, makers of cannabis-derived products are misleading consumers with carefully crafted labels when in reality, they product is made with hemp seed oil or extract – which is not the same as CBD oil (or the other synonyms for CBD)
  2. Think of CBD as a supplement to your current wellness formula, not a cure-all (for now). One thing to note is that there aren’t any clinical trials about the standard dosing measurements for CBD skin care products. When combining CBD beauty products with other active ingredients (think vitamin C and retinol, which are both proven anti-agers) chances are, it will benefit your skin as an additional added benefit.

The Cannabis Glow

As research expands, the CBD skin care products will make their way into the beauty cabinet world-wide. If you are struggling with skin issues, consider using CBD as an effective skin care solution.
